Hikikomori House

Where Are You Now?

Indifferences

Untitled

I came across a Japanese term called the Hikikomori and it refers to a majority of teenagers or social outcasts who seek extreme degrees of isolation and confinement because of various personal and social factors in their lives. It is a phenomenon of reclusive people who generally live in highly demanding environments such as university for teenagers.

As I stood by my window-watching people as they watched me, I began to think the reasons why they would stare at me in such way, as we are indifferent as people. “Do I look strange?” I asked. I took this opportunity to recreate this experience that I had come across, which I built a small house with holes for the eyes and nose to peek through and questioned, What if one day you become a Hikikomori? And how would it feel to be watched and hear conversations from the contained inside world?
